The story of Ostravar begins at the close of the 19th century, a period marked by industrial expansion in Central Europe. The brewery was established in 1897 as the Český akciový pivovar in Moravská Ostrava and brewed its first beer the following year. From its earliest days, Ostravar was designed to serve the growing urban population and the industrial workforce of the region, whose thirst for rich, full-bodied lagers would shape the brewery’s brewing philosophy.

Through two world wars and significant political and economic upheavals, Ostravar remained resilient. After World War II, it underwent nationalization and became part of state-run brewery networks, reflecting the broader shifts in Czech society during the socialist era. The brewery was successively part of various national enterprises, ultimately emerging again as an independent entity following the political changes of 1989.

In 1997, the brewery was incorporated into Pivovary Staropramen, one of the Czech Republic’s largest brewing companies, which itself later became part of the global group Molson Coors Brewing Company. This integration brought new resources and distribution channels while allowing Ostravar to preserve its distinctive brewing traditions.

Unlike many modern breweries that rely on closed systems, Ostravar continues to use an older style of bottom fermentation in open vats (known locally as spilka), followed by extended maturation in cool cellars. Ostravar Original – A classic pale draught beer (10° výčepní), light and refreshing, ideal for everyday drinking.

Ostravar Mustang – A pale lager with a slightly higher strength (11° ležák), offering more pronounced hop and malt balance.

Ostravar Premium (12°) – Considered the brewery’s flagship full-bodied lager, known for its rich, well-rounded flavor.

Beyond these staples, Ostravar produces a rotating series of specialty beers. These include the bold Černá Barbora, a strong dark lager with complex roasted and caramel notes — its name pays homage to Saint Barbara, the patron saint of miners and a symbolic figure in the region’s industrial heritage. Ostravar also releases limited “Speciály ze spilky” (specials from the fermentation room) throughout the year, showcasing seasonal creativity and experimental brewing techniques.

Cultural Importance and Community Engagement

Ostravar is more than a beer brand; it’s a cultural institution in the Moravian-Silesian region. For generations, locals have associated the brewery with community life — from casual gatherings at neighborhood pubs to celebratory events. In recent years, the brewery expanded its presence by opening Ostravarny, branded taprooms and gastropubs that emphasize genuine Czech hospitality, quality tank beer, and a personal atmosphere. These spaces serve as cultural hubs for locals and visitors alike and are part of a strategy to strengthen the brewery’s footprint beyond just beer production.

Ostravar also participates in regional festivals and events, forging connections between brewing, music, and Czech culture, and introducing its beers to a broader national audience.

Distribution and Modern Presence

While for most of its history Ostravar’s beers were sold primarily in and around Ostrava and the Moravian-Silesian region, distribution has expanded significantly since the late 2010s. Today, its beers are available throughout the Czech Republic in pubs, retail outlets, and increasingly in canned formats, making them accessible to beer enthusiasts nationwide.

This wider availability represents both a commercial opportunity and a commitment by the brewery to share its heritage more broadly, without sacrificing the traditional brewing values that have defined it for more than a century.
