Introducing Czech Breweries, Part 3 – Pivovar Konrad
Pivovar Konrad: The Heart of Brewing Tradition in Vratislavice nad Nisou
In the historic district of Vratislavice nad Nisou, in the northern Czech city of Liberec.cz (Liberecký kraj), lies a brewery that has embodied the spirit of Czech beer culture for more than a century and a half: Pivovar Konrad. Known locally and increasingly internationally for its well-crafted lagers, deep traditional roots, and resilient story of revival, Konrad stands today as both a guardian of brewing heritage and an innovator in a modern beer landscape.
Origins and Early Years: A 19th-Century Beginning
The story of Pivovar Konrad begins in the late 19th century — a time when Czech brewing was flourishing across the Bohemian lands. The brewery was built in 1873–1874 in Vratislavice nad Nisou and quickly became a center of quality beer production in the region. From its opening, the brewery produced beer that soon gained admiration both locally and beyond, reaching markets as far as Vienna, a testament to its early success and prominence. By the late 1800s, annual production exceeded 100,000 hectoliters, reflecting a period of rapid expansion and commercial vitality. During this era, the brewery was even honored by a visit from Emperor Franz Joseph I, a memorable highlight in its early history.
Throughout the early 20th century and the interwar First Republic period, the brewery continued to thrive. Its beers earned accolades at international exhibitions, including recognition at the Vienna Kitchen Art Exhibition in 1906, establishing it as a respected producer of Czech beer. The brewery became an integral part of everyday life in Vratislavice, supporting local employment and becoming part of the community’s identity.
Twentieth-Century Challenges: Closure, Transition, and Revival
Despite its longstanding success, the brewery’s story was not without hardship, particularly in the late 20th century. In 1998, the brewery was unexpectedly closed by its then-owner, the international brewing group Bass International Brewers, which had consolidated it under the umbrella of larger Czech breweries. Production ceased, workers were let go, and the brewery’s future seemed uncertain.
Yet this gap in brewing tradition lasted only two years. In 2000, Czech company Hols, a local investor group, purchased the facilities and set out to revive beer production. Due to legal ownership of the original brewery name (“Vratislav”), the renewed venture adopted a new brand name: Konrad — inspired by a historical figure connected to the region and chosen for its clarity and international appeal. Thus, under this refreshed identity, the brewery’s legacy was reborn.
This rebirth marked a significant moment not only for the brewery but for the local community. After a brief period of dormancy, beers were flowing again in Vratislavice — a powerful symbol of resilience and passion for Czech brewing craftsmanship. Today, Konrad thrives once more, with production expanding, customer interest growing, and the brewery earning both domestic and international recognition.
The Beer: Tradition Meets Quality
At the heart of Pivovar Konrad’s success is its beer: traditional Czech lagers and a growing portfolio of styles that showcase both heritage and innovation. The brewery uses pristine spring water drawn from its own wells in the Jizera Mountains, classic Žatec hops, and locally sourced barley — ingredients that form the backbone of Czech brewing excellence.
Konrad’s main offerings include classic Czech lager styles ranging from lighter beers to stronger brews, each with a distinct character:
Konrad 10° – A light, refreshing Czech beer with a mild hop presence and drinkable body.
Konrad 11° – A clear golden lager noted for its hoppy aroma and crisp finish, representing a quintessential Czech pilsner style.
Konrad 12° – A slightly stronger lager with full flavor, often regarded as a flagship product of the brewery.
Beyond these, Konrad also offers seasonal and specialty beers, including amber ales, darker lagers, and innovative brews that blend traditional techniques with modern tastes. Beer enthusiasts have found much to appreciate in these varieties, with some reaching high ratings on beer review sites.
Awards and International Recognition
Pivovar Konrad has not only reclaimed its presence in the Czech beer market but has also made a name on the international stage. In 2019, for example, the brewery’s Konrad 12° pale lager received top honors at the European Beer Star competition in Germany — a prestigious event that celebrates excellence in beer production across Europe. Such recognition underscores Konrad’s commitment to quality and tradition, placing it among noteworthy European craft producers.
Modern Developments and Visitor Experience
In addition to brewing, Pivovar Konrad continues to evolve. In 2023, the brewery undertook a major rebranding effort, updating logos, packaging, and visual identity to create a more contemporary presence while honoring its historical roots. This strategic refresh aims to broaden the brewery’s appeal to a new generation of beer lovers and enhance the overall consumer experience.
